Can You Color Hair Extensions? What You Need to Know Before You Do
Expert Tips for Safe Coloring
One of the most common questions we get is — “Can I color my extensions?” The short answer is yes! You absolutely can — but there are a few important things to know before grabbing your color bowl.
Because our extensions are made from 100% human hair, they can be toned or darkened just like your natural hair. However, we don’t recommend lightening or bleaching extensions. Bleach can strip the cuticle, weaken the strands, and significantly shorten the life of your extensions.
If your goal is to refresh your tone, blend your extensions with your natural color, or add depth and dimension, toning or depositing color is the safest route.
Our Go-To Color Line for Extensions
Our favorite color line for extensions is Redken Shades EQ — a gentle, ammonia-free gloss that enhances color while keeping hair soft, shiny, and healthy. It’s perfect for refreshing faded tones or creating subtle, customized results without damaging the hair.
Always Leave It to a Professional
Even though extensions are made from real human hair, they still require a specialized touch. Always have your extensions colored by a licensed stylist experienced in extension work. They’ll know how to formulate and apply color in a way that protects your investment and delivers the perfect tone.
When colored correctly, your extensions will blend seamlessly, shine beautifully, and last longer — keeping your look flawless from root to tip.
